CHAPTER SIX
MELANIE PULLED HER car into the slot designated as hers at the stadium. The other spots were slowly filling up as the players and staff arrived.
Dalton had been waiting in the lobby, just as heâd said he would. Her face turned warm as she watched him walk toward the car. That was all it took for her body to hum. It was becoming more difficult for her to keep her distance. Being impulsive was so unlike her. She still couldnât believe sheâd kissed him after sheâd told him they should only be friends. Had she opened the door to rejection again? Thank goodness he seemed at ease as they drove to the stadium. She was relieved he didnât mention the kiss.
Pulling a bag along with her medical one out of the backseat, she joined Dalton at the front of the car. She handed the bigger one to him. âYour warm clothes.â
âThanks.â He glanced at the sky, where gray clouds gathered. âIâm going to need them.â
She nodded.
âWhatâs going on with you? Itâs like there is a hum of electricity about you.â
âI guess itâs excitement.â Greatâheâd noticed. This was a healthy direction. She led him through a large roll-up door opening big enough for a transfer truck to completely enter.
âWhat are we in, a wind tunnel?â
Melanie pushed her hair out of her face. âItâs like this all the time. Even in the summer. Itâs caused by the air coming off the field though the tunnels.â
They took a ramp and entered another door into a warm, long hallway. Melanie walked ahead of Dalton but she was aware of him close behind her. Too aware.
Never a forward person where men were concerned and still not sure she wasnât making the wrong step, Melanie was still glad sheâd kissed him. When sheâd told him he wasnât invited to stay she hadnât missed that dark look of rejection in his eyes. Something about his expression made her think it was a deep-seated emotion that Dalton felt more than the average person. She didnât want him to leave her place thinking she wasnât attracted to him. Who was she kidding? She wanted him on a level sheâd never felt before but she had no doubt he would break her heart. They didnât want the same things in a relationship.
Today she had a job to do and thinking about Dalton wasnât the best way to do a quality one. Treating him like the visiting professional was what she needed to do.
At another door, she turned the knob and opened it. âThis is the Currentsâ locker room.â
This was her space. Next door was the training room and beyond that the dressing room. She placed her bag on the desk. âYou can leave thatââ she indicated the bag Dalton carried ââon that chair. Most of my time will be spent next door until the game starts. Then Iâll be on the sideline. Iâd be glad to have someone take you up to the Managerâs box if youâd like.
